THE SPANISH CIVIL WAR

MUYHISTORIA
Spain: La batalla del  Ebro y otros frentes de la Guerra Civil espanola.

Novelists like: Ernest Hemingway, Andre Malraux, George Orwell, Nordahl Grieg, Antoine de Saint-Exupery and above all: Photo journalists like Gerda Taro and Robert Capa were the sources for my private interest in studying of the Spanish Civil War. I take it for granted that the works of the persons mentioned are among those few who make you interest in the Spanish Civil War in year 2017? Because of my interest in history I bought a Spanish paper during my stay in Albir, Spain in February. The main content of the paper was dedicated to information about the Spanish Civil War. The paper is a good one for those of us who have an interest in history. To my surprise I see that information about the war must have been selected for reasons unknown to me. What about the activities made by the French novelist Andre Malraux? What about facts about the famous ” Espana squadron ”?I recall photos of Andre Malraux in front of an aircraft- the French bomber ” Potez 540”.
Andre Malraux was not a professional pilot. He was appointed Lieutenant Colonel for the famous ” Escadrille Andre Malraux” even if he had no military education or any qualification in running an air force. No. But he made the whole world know about the war. My interest for the war was made while reading his book ” The Hope ”( L’Espoir) and viewing his film about the war, ” L’Espoir”. ” For whom the bell tolls” by Ernest Hemingway is another book which made me aware of the conflict in Spain.
What about the Internationale Brigades and facts about the contribution from Norway and Sweden and Denmark? The Norwegian broadcasting reporter, Yngvar Ustvedt, wrote a  book about the Norwegians who participated in the war: ” Arbeidere under våpen. Norske frivillige i den spanske borgerkrigen”. The book was published in 1975. A report about the battle of Ebro is a part of the book.
Olaf Johansen from the city of Bergen, Odd Olsen from the city ofTrondheim, Bjarne Jensen from the city of Tønsberg, Einar Pettersen from the county, Østfold, Rolf Eriksen from the city of  Oslo and Rudolf Paulsen from the city of Narvik were killed during the battle of Ebro. I do not how many from Sweden who were  died, but Karl Ernstedt was killed.  About 300 Norwegians and about 600 from Sweden  participated in the war.

Novelists who supported the fascists in Spain have been forgotten or not mentioned due to reasons unknown to me?What about: The British novelist, Evelyn Waugh, the Americans: Gertrude Stein and Ezra Pound?
The paper has also dedicted two pages for those who are interested in military history. Guns, aircrafts, tanks, helmets and military equipments used during the war are presented at page 42 and 43. The different aircrafts used by ” Escarille Andre Malraux” are missing. No photos or drawings of the French aircraft , ” Potez 540” , which was used in the fim ” L’Espoir”. Sorry.
I am happy observing that the works of Robert Capa and Gerda Taro are presented in the paper.

CASA PINET

CASA PINET: THE LAST” THE RED CAFE” IN SPAIN
When you  enter the cafe ,you are met with the famous statement known to many left wing politicians : ” Stand up, damned of the Earth ”-” The Internationale ” – the fighting song.
Some never give up the hope and the  fight for a just society. No. The political situation for the majority of the Spanish population is not a good one. In the town of Tarbena you find one person who has the correct answer to any problem caused by man. You find him in ” Casa Pinet” working in his cafe telling all the guests that communism is not dead at all. He is called the last communist because he plays ” The Internationale” every half hour in the cafe to wake up the guests!
Jeromino Pinet is the name of the owner of the nice restaurant. He was not present when I was there.
CASA PINET is a small cafe/restaurant situated in the town, Tarbena. The village is situated in the Province of Alicante.
The majority of the members of the Town Council do not agree with the politics issued by the owner of the cafe. The members of the Town Council want to close the cafe once and for all. During the Spanish Civil War ,the village was a place where  anti-Franco politicians stayed.

For years politicians  have paid the cafe a visit: The late Swedish Prime Minister of Sweden. Olof Palme
and the former Prime Minister of Norway ,currently the Secretary General of NATO, Jens Stoltenberg ,have signed the guest book for visitors.

The walls of the cafe are decorated with photos of Che Guevara, Fidel Castro, Willy Brandt, Nelson Mandela and many other left wing politicians unknown to me.
The food is good. The wine is good. The music: ” The Internationale”- Stand up, damned of the Earth!

” The Red Cafe” is a nice place to visit.

For your information only: ” The Internationale ” – ” L’Internationale”  was written by Eugene Pottier in 1871. The song known to most of us is written by Pierre Degeyter in 1885.

VALENCIA: SCULPTURES

Spain. The city of Valencia. If you want to pay the city of Valencia a visit, I recommend you to go to
the city of Arts and Science. I was fascinated by the new architecture and the sculptures for public viewing. Valencia is the capital of autonomous community of Valencia.About 800.000 inhabitants.
Valencia is the third largest city of Spain after Madrid and Barcelona.

SPAIN: ALBIR - A FORGOTTEN SCULPTURE?

SPAIN: ALBIR 2017
When you want to set up a new sculpture for public viewing, people get involved in the talk about where to set up the sculpture. While making my daily walk to the beach of the city of Albir , Spain, I was surprised seeing that a sculpture had been placed on the veranda of one of the buildings  close to the beach.  The balcony is not the most attactive place to put a sculpture. On the other hand: Attention was attracted by those who find the viewing of buildings an interesting business.
Albir is a tourist city situated about 65 km North of Alicante, Spain. A nice city with few scupltures set up for public viewing.
